Your beautiful confident friend who can eat whatever she wants without gaining a pound.
A co-worker who’s rising in the ranks faster than you.
The actress who always looks flawless and has the perfect relationship.
The influencer on Instagram who seems to have it all together.
What do all these women have in common? They all have insecurities, things that make them feel vulnerable and make them doubt themselves and their abilities. From the outside, it’s easy to believe that’s not the case.
Why does this matter? Because it means you’re not alone. There’s nothing wrong with you if you have a bad hair day or you ate an entire jar of almond butter last night. No, wait – that was me.
The point is, I want you to know you’re not separate. We are all one. We have the same issues, the same struggles. Our struggles may not look the same from the outside, but we’ve all got them. It’s part of being human, which I’m willing to bet you are – no matter how much you act like a superhero.
That’s what the Know Your Worth series is all about. Tearing down the facade that everyone but you knows what they’re doing or that they magically got to where they are today, without effort or struggle. I wasted a good portion of my childhood believing just that. My mind was in conflict trying to connect with people on one hand and simultaneously feeling as though I wasn’t enough because my hair was curly or my thighs touched. I looked to actresses on TV and models in magazines as an example of what I should look like and then felt ashamed that I didn’t see those ideals when I looked in the mirror.
I don’t want any other little girls to go through this. I want them to know that it’s normal to feel awkward and out of place sometimes. And that it’s also completely possible to feel awkward and out of place at one moment and achieve all your dreams the next.
Hopefully, once you see that other people aren’t perfect and there is no “right” way, you’ll give yourself permission to feel like whatever you’re doing IS right for you. By reading the stories of these women, I hope you will be one step closer to releasing whatever it is that’s holding you back so you can achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Remember that it’s okay, and even normal, to struggle – it’s getting back up that matters.
